Potential for Natural Attenuation of Domestic and Agricultural Pollution in Karst Groundwater Environments

چکیده
In karst areas, anthropogenic contaminants reach the subsurface with detrimental effects on groundwater ecosystem and downstream springs, which often serve as drinking water sources for local human communities. We analyzed chemistry microbial community composition in upstream locations of five hydrokarst systems (HKS) during four seasons. Conductivity nitrates were higher springs than pre-karst waters, whereas concentration organic matter, considered here a pollution indicator, was lower. The varied largely between locations, multiple species potentially pathogenic bacteria decreasing HKS. Bacteria indicative decreased well when passing through HKS, but potential biodegraders increased. This suggests that HKS can filter out part polluting matter and, it, associated microorganisms. Nevertheless, quality, including presence pathogens must be further monitored to control whether is appropriate consumption. parallel, populations located advised risks resulting from their daily activities, improper stocking various wastes dumping refuse surface streams.

A review of the potential and actual sources of pollution to groundwater in selected karst areas in Slovenia
Slovenian karst areas extend over 43% of the country; limestones and dolomites of the Mesozoic era prevail. In Slovenia karst groundwater contributes up to 50% of the total drinking water supply. The quality of water is very high, despite the fact that it is extremely vulnerable to pollution. The present article is a study and a review of the potential and actual sources of pollution to the gro...
متن کاملNatural Attenuation Potential of Cyanide in Groundwater Near a SPL Landfill
Spent pot lining (SPL), a waste product containing cyanide, has been deposited in a landfill at an aluminum refining site in British Columbia (Canada). Since the capping of the landfill, a continuous decline of the cyanide level in the groundwater was observed for more than a decade, suggesting that natural attenuation might be taking place. The information gathered from a critical review of th...

متن کاملBacterial Community Dynamics in Dichloromethane-Contaminated Groundwater Undergoing Natural Attenuation
The uncontrolled release of the industrial solvent methylene chloride, also known as dichloromethane (DCM), has resulted in widespread groundwater contamination in the United States. Here we investigate the role of groundwater bacterial communities in the natural attenuation of DCM at an undisclosed manufacturing site in New Jersey. This study investigates the bacterial community structure of g...
متن کاملNatural attenuation of zinc pollution in smelter-affected soil.
Previous synchrotron X-ray microprobe measurements of Zn speciation in contaminated and uncontaminated soils have identified phyllosilicate as the main sequestration phase. The emphasis now is focused on comparing the nature and properties of neoformed and geogenic phyllosilicate species to understand natural attenuation processes. Refined structural characterization of the two types of Zn-cont...
